Viagra provides Xmas trees with some seasonal stiffness
Scientists claim that the best way to perk up a flaccid Christmas tree is to feed it Viagra. According to the researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umea, Viagra fed Christmas trees have longer, stronger and thicker branches. In addition, once the trees are cut, continuing to feed them with Viagra stops them shedding their needles and keeps them in good condition for much longer.
The experiment with the Christmas trees had three groups - a control group, one group treated with an ordinary plant feed and the other group with powdered Viagra tablets. The group of Christmas trees fed with Viagra were shown to have statistically significantly better growth results than both of the other two groups.
In addition, Viagra has also been shown to help cut flowers stand up straighter for longer. Researchers in Israel and Australia have shown that small amounts of Viagra dissolved in water can make cut flowers last twice as long. They showed that just 1mg of Viagra dissolved in water helped two vases of cut flowers last a week longer than they would normally be expected to last.
The reason for this, in a nutshell, is that Viagra increases the life of cut flowers by slowing down the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). The production of cGMP is mediated by nitric oxide. Perhaps one day, Viagra will have an alternative use - as an eco-friendly way of helping agricultural products to last longer.
