Viagra's uplifting role in the fight against the Taliban
The CIA in the US has a new tool in obtaining information from Afghan Warlords. That tool is - Viagra! According to the Washington Post, it is one of a number of enducements that is being utilised.
In one particular instance, a 60 year old warlord, who has four wives, was given four viagra pills. A few days later, he provided accurate information on the movements of the Taliban in exchange for more pills.
Viagra is not a well known drug in the outer reaches of Afghanistan, so the issue needs to be handled "sensitively". So whilst the drug is not offered to younger Afghans, the more senior warlords are offered Viagra in an exchange for information.
In the instance referred to above, the warlord who was head of a clan in Southern Afghanistan had not thus far cooperated with the Americans. When it was discovered that he had four wives, and was in fact sixty years old, the pills were offered to him with an explanation of their benefits. Four days later, he was a very happy man, and told the American agent that he was a "Great Man". He subsequently offered his full cooperation to the Americans.
The CIA have historically used a wide range of bribes to get influence warlords, including dental work and toys. However, they do not normally offer monetary bribes as this can arouse suspicion.
