Interesting and little known facts about Pfizer's Viagra
Viagra was launched on an unsuspecting male population in 1998
- Unsurprisingly, it became the fastest selling drug in history
- It is still the best selling erectile dysfunction medication, even though there has been 'stiff' competition from Cialis and Levitra.
- Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction was originally discovered accidentally. Viagra was developed originally as a treatment for high blood pressure. It didn't work for that purpose. It was subsequently tried as a treatment for angina - it didn't work for that purpose either. However, after the drug was tested in humans, the male volunteers refused to hand the tablets back at the end of the trial. It was subsequently discovered that Viagra had an interesting "side" effect - erections. The rest is history!
- Viagra sales have exceeded $1 billion every year since it was introduced and are currently at nearly $2 billion per year.
- Robert Dole, the unsuccessful Republican party nominee, endorsed Viagra in a series of TV adverts in the US.
- The overall success rate of Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction is about 80%.
